Our youth productions at Wildbrook Forest Theatre are truly unique- as they are rooted in the ancient tradition of oral story-telling and are student-generated (with gentle guidance from an adult director). After hearing a telling of a folk-tale, each student is a collaborator in every aspect of the rehearsal process for the performance of that folk-tale: from choosing a desired role and creating lines for the characters to adapting the original story, curating costumes and contributing to set and playbill design. The story that the students tell, improv-style, during the final performance is a unique adaptation of a story for this time, place, and group. This play-based process is not only fun and engaging but also fosters collaboration skills and empowers participants to be artistic creators- growing their social-emotional skills and their imaginations. Additionally, immersed in a forest setting for rehearsals, the students form deep connections to a wild place through their imaginary play. They are encouraged to use natural elements from what they can find in the forest to contribute to the set design and the forest stage feels less like a theatrical set and more like a comfortable home playground for the actors. During our youth productions, we meet students where they are- giving them opportunities to explore their growth edges and shine.
